About Battle Mechanism (I) & Subsequent Game Balance Adjustments

2021-09-15

Dear explorers,

We've recently received some feedback in which many explorers expressed their confusion about the ship battle mechanism, so we decided to explain the design philosophy and battle mechanism of the game and take this opportunity to thank all explorers who have given us advice and feedback.

In the Lagrange Network, we are always committed to depicting industrial-style space warfare. Ships and weapons adopted in space battles all strictly follow the corresponding technical settings. Against the backdrop where the warp drive is popularized and the material science-related technology is highly advanced, space warfare in the Lagrange Network takes on the following characteristics:

1) Frigates and above-class ships are usually fitted with warp drive, and such ship hulls are required to be large in dimensions and have solid structures to adapt to the gravitational changes. The smaller combat units, fighters and corvettes, are unable to engage warp drive themselves and can only be carried by ships to participate in combat.

2) Speaking of weapons, the combat performance of the conventional kinetic weapons (including cannons and railguns) has been greatly improved in space battles since they are not affected by atmospheric drag in space. Instead of disappearing from the battlefield, they have been more fully developed and have become the type of weapon that occupies a fundamental position.

Guided weapons (including missiles and torpedoes) are capable of striking large ships with precision and dealing effective damage against them. They can still play an important role on the battlefield where ships are commonly equipped with armor.

Energy weapons (including pulse weapons, ion cannons, and plasma weapons) are technically advanced weapons capable of effectively penetrating conventional armor and inflicting massive damage. They are powerful weapons being developed by all the Galactic Factions. At the same time, however, research on energy shields against energy weapons is being conducted extensively. The Lagrange Network is in a fierce arms race centered around offense and defense.

In addition to ships and weapons, space warfare in the Lagrange Network has characteristics different from the general battlefield environment in terms of fleet formation, weapon operation, aircraft, and anti-aircraft support. In this post, we will first explain the battle mechanism related to aircraft and air defense that has been frequently asked.

1) Aircraft

Aircraft are divided into fighters and corvettes. Both of them need to be loaded by a mothership to engage in fleet-to-fleet combat. Fighters carry only a small amount of fuel and have to return to the mothership to resupply after a period of time. While corvettes possess a long-term operational capability and can continuously engage outside the mothership.

Aircraft play an important role in fleet-to-fleet combat in the Lagrange Network. They can cross fleet formations and launch attacks directly against ships in the middle and back rows.

Attacks from some aircraft are capable of inflicting damage to the target ship's primary weapon system. When its structural HP falls to 0, a primary weapon system will no longer be available for combat. It cannot be recovered during battles until post-battle emergency repairs are performed on it.

2) Air Defense Mechanism

Interceptors are aircraft designed for dogfighting. Attackers and most corvettes are usually capable of dogfighting as well. When an enemy aircraft reaches into your formation, these aircraft mentioned above will attack the intruding aerial targets to protect your ships.

How Does An Interceptor Work

Most ships are equipped with exclusive or generic anti-aircraft weapons capable of countering attacks on ships from enemy aircraft.

How Does An Anti-Aircraft Weapon Work

Some ships with anti-aircraft capabilities can provide support to the same-row ships in their formation and deploy anti-aircraft UAVs and anti-aircraft weapons to attack invading aerial units. Those outstanding among them have a greater anti-aircraft range and can even attack any enemy aircraft that reaches into their formations.

3) Anti-Missile Mechanism

Some anti-aircraft weapons have interception and anti-missile capabilities, which means they have a chance to directly shoot down incoming missiles to protect ships from missile attacks.

We will continue to update the explanation of ship classes and roles, weapon attack cycles, weapon attack priority, and other mechanisms in subsequent posts. Please stay updated for more information.

Besides, the following content will be updated soon:

1) Module Description Improvements

It has come to our attention that key information about the scope and mechanism of module effects was missing in some of the descriptions for weapon modules which may affect your understanding and judgment of module effects. To address this issue, we've already fixed these confusing descriptions, namely, the descriptions about Anti-Aircraft Range, Interceptor Missile, Damage Monitoring, and Attack Against Weapon Systems, in the routine update on Sep 15. In addition, we will also further optimize the UI display of weapon and module information soon.

2) Ship & Aircraft Balance Adjustments

Some explorers have reported to us that the combat performance of some ships and aircraft does not match their ratings. For instance, some ships do not reach the level corresponding to their ratings of anti-aircraft capability while other ones perform beyond their ratings. As for this issue, we expect to make a game balance adjustment soon to bring out more tactical ship combination options to you.

3) Battle Report Info Optimization

We will optimize the disclosure of the battle report in a recent update to provide more stats and content in battle reports to help you better understand the battle situations.

Mix-matching strategies and ship combinations is an essential part of Infinite Lagrange. We are always committed to providing you with balanced and diversified strategy options.

Thank you all for your support. We will do our best to bring you a better gaming experience. Looking forward to making a unique space-themed strategy game together with all of you.
